SPECIAL EDUCATION SUPPORTS and SERVICES

Special Education supports and services in the Pleasant Valley School District (PVSD) include a full continuum of services and are in compliance with Federal and State laws. The delivery of these supports and services are provided primarily through inclusive practices (Inclusive Statement). However, PVSD utilizes resources outside the district including; Colonial Intermediate Unit 20, local approved private schools and other state-licensed educational programs for low incidence students with severe needs. The largest population of students served through special education has a specific learning disability and is supported through Learning Support Programs. Other students with disabilities served are those with Autism, Deaf-blindness, Deafness, Emotional Disturbance, Hearing Impairment, Mental Retardation, Multiple Disabilities, Orthopedic Impairment, Other Health Impaired, Speech or Language Impaired, Traumatic Brain Injured, and Visual Impairment including Blindness.

Related services that are required to assist a student with a disability to benefit from special education include transportation, occupational therapy, physical therapy, orientation and mobility, psychological services, etc.

A Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and Individualized Education Program (IEP) team support each student identified with a disability and in need of specially designed instruction. All student programs are reevaluated by the MDT at least once every three years, except for those students with mental retardation. They will continue to be reevaluated every two years. IEP's are reviewed and or revised at least once a year to ensure that all students needs are being met. In addition students with disabilities are supported and served by guidance counselors, school psychologists, and educational consultants, as well as by state agencies Mental Health/Mental Retardation, Children & Youth Services, Probation, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, etc. in a collaborative fashion.

Other students with disabilities that do not qualify for supports and services through special education may be provided for as a Protected Handicapped Student under the requirements of section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and chapter 15 of state regulations title 22. Students with an identifiable disability which substantially limits or prohibits participation in or access to an aspect of the school program is provided with modification and adaptations and a Chapter 15 Service Agreement is developed.
