About Us
The Pleasant Valley High School
Located in
Brodheadsville, Pleasant Valley High School houses approximately 1,800 students
in grades 10-12. Comprehensive programs offer students options to pursue
college and university programs, careers, vocational and the military upon
graduation. Pleasant Valley High School is a member of the Mountain Valley
Conference which provides the avenue for co-curricular activities and
interscholastic competition. Features outlined in the high school program: A
Performance-Based Academic Curriculum with quality college preparatory and
Advanced Placement programs, career preparedness through applied techniques in
Tech Prep and School to Work planning, and a choice of 27 vocational-technical
programs offered by the Monroe County Technical Institute. High School programs
include: A Student Assistance Program referral known as the SHARE Team with
educators trained to direct students with emotional concern or substance abuse
issues to community agency workers within the district. Peer Listeners and Peer
Mediation promote “students helping students.”
Additionally, the high school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities
available to all students. Non-athletic offering include, Band, Marching, Jazz,
Pep, Leo Club, Cheerleading for Football, Basketball, and Wrestling; Chess,
Chorus, Varsity Chorale, Class Officers, Drama Club, Drill Silk’s, Foreign
Language Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Career Apprenticeship Aides,
Intramural sports, Jazz Band, Junior States of America, Majorettes, Mock Trial,
National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, German Honor Society, Music
Honor Society, Scholastic Scrimmage, School Newspaper, Show Choir, Ski Club,
Spring Musical, Stage Crew, Student Government, Key Club, Tutoring, Yearbook and
Government Intern Program. Pleasant Valley High School participates in a full
slate of interscholastic sports including the following: Boys’ Football, Girls’
Field Hockey, Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer, Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country, Boys’ and
Girls’ Tennis, Boys’ and Girls’ Golf, Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Boys’
Wrestling, Golf, Boys’ Baseball, Girls’ Softball, Girls’ Volleyball and Boys’
and Girls’ Track. Active Parent involvement includes a Parent Advisory
Committee, All Sports Club, Band Parents and Chemical Free Party Committee.
Physical Plant
Pleasant Valley High School has 93 classrooms dedicated to serve 1,800
students. Several rooms have specific assignments: 1 Gymnasium (seats 2, 400),
1 Gymnasium (seats 650), 1 auxiliary gym, 1 weight room, 8 science laboratories
(4 rooms connected with operational greenhouse), 1 band room with practice
rooms, 1 music room with practice rooms, 1 library, 5 art rooms, 3 industrial
technology shops, 3 family and consumer life science rooms, 5 business and
computer rooms, 2 computer centers with approximately 90 computer stations with
Internet access, 5 special education support rooms, a visual media TV studio and
a distance learning lab. There are 2 cafeterias with a seating capacity of 325
and 190 and 2 auditoriums that seat 12,89 and 520 students. The remaining
classrooms seat an average of 30 students. The physical plant enables the staff
to carry out the mission of achieving academic excellence. The commitment by
the Board of Education and the local community to improve facilities allows the
faculty to implement the graduation requirements set forth in Chapter 4 and NCLB.
The high school facilities, improved standards, and a highly trained staff
provide students with opportunities to learn and to prepare for adult life.
Professional Personnel
Pleasant Valley
High School employs highly qualified staff, dedicated to meet the needs of a
diverse student population. Serving nearly 1,800 students in grades 10-12, the
112 faculty and staff possess---bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and
administrative certificates. Two school nurses and 5 guidance counselors are
included in the faculty total. Individual and small group counseling, crisis
intervention, appropriate referral and follow up are available to students.
Other students services from guidance include scheduling, college placement,
foreign exchange information, career exploration and vocational placement and
scholarship information. Additionally, 4 administrators support students,
faculty, and auxiliary personnel. The principal and assistant principal’s
possess their masters degrees.
These professional
employees are deeply committed to quality instruction and a strong curriculum.
Through intensive block scheduling and extensive staff development the faculty
incorporates critical classroom instructional techniques designed to meet the
needs of all students. Cooperative learning, peer analysis, independent
practices, and group interactions highlight several methods used by the
classroom teacher. The high school curriculum reflects sound practices in
academic development. Age appropriate activities with specified student
learning performance outcomes support graduation requirements

School Graduation Requirements
Each student
must register for a minimum of eight (8) credits per year. Promotion from one
grade to the next and graduation is based on satisfactory completion of
individual courses for a total of 28.50 credits as follows:
