Student Scheduling Information

2006-2007 School Year

                                   High School Students: Grades 10-12

The selection of courses for next year should be made with considerable thought and with the input and assistance of your parents, teachers, guidance counselors and administrative staff. While we hold ourselves read to help guide and direct you in the scheduling process, we realize that it is you, the student, who must weigh all of the options to make the most meaningful selections. as you begin the selection process, we encourage you to makes decisions based not only on the factors mentioned, but also in your own past performance. it is you who must invest the time and energy needed to achieve successfully within the requirements of each curriculum area.

Parents:
Your input and guidance in assisting your son/daughter in the course selection is greatly appreciated. We realize the decision process is sometimes difficult and confusing. your best guides are to evaluate your son's/daughter's past performance and to ask a high school guidance counselor for information. Scheduling Process and Timeline:

January   Program of studies (distributed in homerooms) Scheduling Cards
February 7 Parent Scheduling Information Meeting
February 14 Scheduling Cards returned to Homerooms
February 28 Scheduling Requests entered in the Master Schedule
March-April Guidance meets with students to review preliminary
schedules as warranted.
May 1 Preliminary Schedules Distributed
May 1-June Resolve all Scheduling Conflicts

Scheduling Steps:

  1. Obtain scheduling form and program of studies
  2. Review program of studies course descriptions
  3. Review Scheduling Form
  4. Check-Off Required courses on front of Form
  5. Check-Off Electives on back of form
  6. Indicate alternative elective choices on front of form
  7. Signature of Student and Parent with Date
  8. Return to your homeroom teacher.

Graduation Requirements

Each student in the High School, sophomores and juniors, must be registered for at least 8.0 credits per year. Seniors are required a minimum of 6.0 credits. Promotion from one grade to the next, and ultimately, graduation, will be based on the satisfactory completion of individual courses. the chart below shows eligibility for graduation. students must earn credits in 9-12. the basic graduation requirements, which all students must successfully pass, including the following:

*PSSA Ehancement: Students who score below the proficient level on the 8th grade PPSA test must enroll in and pass a 9 week .5 credit enhancement course in Math and/or English prior to the Taking of the 11th grade PPSA assessment. This is required for Graduation.

   Graduation Requirements beginning with the class of 2007

Beginning with the class of 2007, to graduate from Pleasant Valley High School, students must demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics. as per Title 22. Education, Chapter 4. Academic Standards and Assessment 4.24. High School Graduation Requirements, students must "demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics on either the State assessments administered in grade 11 or 12 or local assessment aligned with academic standards and State assessments under 4.52 (Relating to Local assessment system) at the proficient level or better to Graduate". The pleasant Valley School District recognizes that students must be given the opportunities to demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics during their senior year in order to meet part of their graduation requirement. with this in mind, the district proposes to iniate a proficiency verification program during the senior year that will remediate and assess students to determine individual proficiency in the reading, writing and mathematics PA Academic Standards.
